Injuries hurt Titans in loss to Cowboys
Saturday 17 August 2013 7:30 PM
The iSelect Gold Coast Titans lost forwards Greg Bird and Luke O'Dwyer to game-ending injuries in a 22-10 loss to the North Queensland Cowboys at 1300SMILES Stadium tonight.
The Titans were in the arm wrestle trailing 12-4 at halftime but their task to reel in a desperate Cowboys outfit playing for their season was made even harder with injures to Bird (back) and O'Dwyer (knee) reducing the visitors to 15-men during the second half.
The Titans reduced the deficit to two points courtesy of winger Kevin Gordon's 50th try for the club but the Cowboys sealed the win with second half tries to Kyle Feldt (59th minute) and Glenn Hall (73rd minute).
Despite the loss, the Titans remain in eighth spot heading into the final three matches of the regular season against the Warriors (home), Roosters (away) and Storm (away).
In a cruel blow for the retiring O'Dwyer, the 30-year-old suffered a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament which is likely to end his season prematurely.
Bird suffered back spasms and did not return to the field but his injury is not thought to be serious.
The Titans were boosted pre-match by the late inclusions of fullback Will Zillman and hooker Matt Srama in their respective returns from injury.
However, it was the Cowboys that scored first after just four minutes through forward Gavin Cooper.
Titans winger David Mead responded with his 51st try for the club to reduce the defecit to 6-4 after nine minutes but the Cowboys went into the break with an 8-point lead after a try to winger Kyle Feldt.
