Titans go down swinging against Sharks
Sunday 10 March 2013 8:28 PM
The iSelect Gold Coast Titans have gone down to a desperate Cronulla outfit, falling narrowly short of victory in a 12-10 loss at Sharks Stadium tonight.
In a tight battle, the Titans trailed 12-6 midway through the second half before a try to club debutant Dave Taylor inched the visitors within reach of victory trailing 12-10 in the dying stages.
However, the Titans were unable to convert their late scoring opportunities into points as Cronulla held on for an emotional victory in front of 17,541 fans after a week of turmoil and intense public scrutiny.
The Titans weathered the early storm from a fired up Sharks side as both teams settled into an armwrestle.
It took 27 minutes for the 0-all deadlock to be broken when Sharks centre Matthew Wright scored to give the home side a 6-0 lead.
The Titans hit back immediately after the break with a try to winger David Mead but the home side responded with a try of their own to prop Andrew Fifita to edge ahead 12-6.
The Titans continued to pressure the Sharks' defence and were rewarded for their efforts when Taylor pounced on a kick which had been batted back by Mead to draw within two points of the home side with 10 minutes remaining.
But the Gold Coasters were unable to convert their opportunities into points as the Sharks held on.
