The Aquis Gold Coast Titans have re-signed local product Kane Elgey for the 2017-18 seasons, securing the halfback’s future while he sits out the current season with a serious knee injury.
The Palm Beach Currumbin high school and Tugun Seahawks product said he was relieved that he has had his immediate future decided early and will continue to work hard on his rehabilitation.
“I’m really happy to have my future decided at such an early stage of this season, and know it is here on the Gold Coast,” the 22-year-old said today.
“I can now fully focus on my rehabilitation with my knee with negotiations out of the way.
“I always wanted to stay on the Gold Coast with the Titans. I’m a proud local junior, this is the club that gave me my first opportunity in NRL and I’m keen to repay coach Neil Henry and the club for that.
“It’s an exciting time for the club and I want to play a role in bringing the Titans and the Gold Coast success. We have a lot of good young players and good mix of senior players around us.
“I have a lot of faith in the future of the Titans and in return I appreciate the faith Neil and the club have shown in me after unfortunately suffering a serious knee injury.
“And I also want to repay the Titans fans who have been really supportive last season and since I suffered the injury early this year.”
Elgey has made good early progress with his knee rehabilitation and has been doing some gym work to rebuild strength.
Coach Neil Henry said he was delighted that the local product, who played 16 games in his rookie NRL season in 2015 and was selected in the Prime Minister’s XIII, had pledged his future to the club.
It gives the Titans great strength and depth in the halves with current pairing of Ash Taylor and Tyrone Roberts performing well.
“It’s unfortunate that Kane will miss such a long period of football after working so hard in the off-season; his attitude has been faultless,” Henry said.
“He is a local junior and a big part of our youth development program which I’m confident will take this club forward. He showed his enormous potential last year and can only improve over the next two seasons and I know how determined he is to play a major role in bringing the Titans success.”
