Jekyll and Hyde performances from Titans frustrating Brennan

The mission for Garth Brennan this week is to find out why the Titans can score 28 unanswered points against the Warriors last weekend, then concede 28 points versus Parramatta six days later.

The rookie NRL coach was left scratching his head after his side's 28-12 loss to the Eels at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night, when they led 8-6 midway through the first half.

"If we were a race horse there'd be a stewards' inquiry after last week's performance compared with this week," Brennan said.

Two players – Michael Gordon and Jai Arrow – were held up over the line, Konrad Hurrell lost control of the ball in grounding, and two players – Phillip Sami and Ryan James - crossed before officials blew their whistles for forward passes.

"We can't sit here and blame the referees tonight. We were our own worst enemy," Brennan said.

"It probably wasn't our night tonight. Our most consistent goal kicker in the NRL missed three – unlike him… that probably summed up our night tonight," Brennan said of fullback Michael Gordon, who has potted 58 goals in his previous 19 games.

"They [Eels] ran harder, tackled harder and wanted it more.

"Until our guys realise that the NRL is a tough game and you have to turn up every week, we'll have that inconsistency. That's the most disappointing thing about it.

"Possibly in the second half we created enough chances but the damage was done in the first half."

James also agreed the attitude was lacking in the first half and he blamed himself.

"It was the way we started… for myself I let Tim Mannah run right over the top of me. It's probably the softest try I've ever been a part of," the skipper said.

"It was disappointing to do that after what we did last week when we played so well, completed well and stuck to the game plan.

"This week we didn’t seem to be able to do it. Nothing really fell into place."

There is no seven days to find some solutions as the Titans host top-eight side Penrith at Cbus Super Stadium next Saturday.
