NRLW to kick off 2022 with re-scheduled competition announced

Football will start early in 2022, with the Gold Coast Titans inaugural women’s side to kick off a mega calendar of rugby league next season.

The NRL has announced that the 2021 NRLW season will be shifting to early 2022.

The Titans are supportive of the move which will ensure the competition can go ahead in its entirety, meaning the best NRLW players and all home venues will be available for the competition.

The re-scheduled NRLW competition will lead into the 2022 NRL season, with the women to also play their 2022 fixture later in the calendar year ahead of a World Cup.

Gold Coast CEO Steve Mitchell said while he’d love to see the inaugural squad on field this year, the Titans understand the need to make sure all clubs are able to compete.

“Given the landscape in New South Wales at the moment, this decision makes the most sense for the NRLW competition.

“Our girls are keen to get on the field and represent our region, but they also understand that it isn’t as simple for players at the southern clubs at the moment.

“We’re determined to bring the NRLW trophy back to the coast and the playing group that we’ve got have been ultimate professionals that have adapted to the changing schedule.

“I’d also like to thank our partners and inaugural NRLW Members, your support is crucial to the success of our women’s program and your benefits remain even though the competition changes dates.

“We’ll continue to communicate with all of our partners and supporters over the coming months as we build towards our inaugural NRLW season.”
