'Itching to put the jersey on': Schoupp eager to earn centre spot

There isn't anyone keener to don the new Gold Coast jersey than Aaron Schoupp.

The 32-game outside back joined the Titans on a three-year deal at the start of November and after an intense last few months training hard at Parkwood, the new recruit can't wait to wear his new colours, which could be as soon as early next month at the club's first trial against the Broncos on the Sunshine Coast.

"I've been itching to put the Titans jersey on... it's been a hard 12 weeks," Schoupp revealed.

"I feel like I'm part of the club already, but the feeling will really hit me when I put the jersey on and start playing.

"I'm not sure yet [if I will play in the first trial]. I haven't really spoken Justin about it, but if I do get out there and play, I'll be really excited."

The Wollongong-born talent is vying for a spot in the back five for Round 1 against the Tigers and with two of the side's regular centres set to miss the season opener, the opportunity is within reach for the 21-year-old.

"The centre battle has been really good. With BK (Brian Kelly) and Patty Herbert out for the start of the year, Treymain (Spry), Phil (Sami) and myself have all been training quite hard," Schoupp said.

"There's a few young blokes as well that could step up, so I think the competition has been good. It's healthy for the boys... it brings out the best in you.

"I'll leave the selection stuff up to Justin, but whatever he does, it'll be the best for the team."

Schoupp has also shared what it was like to take part in the Titans' off-season army camp which aimed to build character, grow camaraderie and strengthen resilience; with fans also given an insight through the release of 'Behind the Grind'.

Behind the Grind: Tried, tested and pushed to the absolute limit

"That army camp nearly broke me to be honest," he revealed.

"It was probably my first proper army camp I've been on. As everyone would've seen in the video, the way we pushed through from the start to the end, we really leant on each other.

"At the start, I think we were waiting for the instructors to let us know what to do even though they were yelling and screaming at us, but by the end, we were attacking it quite well.

"The energy it's created... I think we were a good group before that camp, but I think it's definitely made us stronger and tighter."
