Sami keen to put pre-season preparation to the test in trial

Phil Sami is one relieved man to see the back of pre-season.

Although more than eager to have the footy return this week when the Titans take on the Broncos in a trial on the Sunshine Coast, the 25-year-old hasn't taken for granted the benefits he and his teammates will get from the tough summer months at Parkwood.

Especially under arrival of new physical performance chief Cameron Ferguson who has been a master at whipping the squad into shape for the year ahead.

"It's been a long, tough pre-season under Cam... he's been belting us," Sami revealed.

"Obviously pre-seasons are to get your body in shape and build your fitness up so you're firing from Round 1, so hopefully we get through these trials and everyone will be sweet.

"I just can't wait to play this weekend with the boys, so it will be good to get out and see how we go."

Experiencing a heavy duty training regime over the break, which also included a three-day army style camp to build resilience and character, the Gold Coast outside back feels it's been one of his preparations to date.

"Every pre-season is different and every strength and conditioning coach has their own ways of doing things," Sami said.

"It's been really tough under Cam. He loves flogging us up in that conditioning room and that's probably something that's different for us this year. We go into a hard session on the field and then after that, we back it up again in the conditioning room.

"Looking back on it, that's been really tough and I'm glad that's over, that's for sure; but obviously it's for our own good and everyone's now fit and firing.

"There's definitely a method to his madness as he says."

Alongside Aaron Schoupp in the centres for this weekend's trial, Sami is excited to be playing alongside the new recruit with Brian Kelly unable to play due to suspension.

"It's unfortunate that we have BK out for the first three rounds. Everyone knows the player he is... he's a gun," he said.

"This whole pre-season, we've been working on our combinations with the left and right side and Schouppy obviously is on the other side at centre.

"I'm excited to see him in the Titans colours too. He's been working hard this pre-season and he'll get his first hit out this weekend so I'm keen to see how he goes."
