BMD Premiership grand final preview

The time has come to crown the 2023 BMD Premiership champions.

The Burleigh Bears will take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls for the title this Saturday, May 13, in what is shaping up to be a blockbuster clash between the veterans of the competition and the relative newcomers.

Burleigh finished in second spot after the regular season, while Wynnum Manly placed fourth, causing a massive upset last week when they knocked out competition leaders Souths Logan to take their deserved place in the BMD Premiership grand final.

Here are the details and coaches thoughts for game day.

Burleigh v Wynnum Manly: Grand final preview

Coaches comments

Burleigh Bears coach Scott Cooke: Preparation for Saturday has been good. We had a light run on Tuesday night with the quicker turnaround and a session last night (Thursday), which was nice and sharp. It's business as usual for us. Coming into this game, our main focus is just probably consistency. We want to make sure when we're in the game, we don't drift out of it. We have to stay focused and stay on task. That will be my message to the girls... we have to train the same as we want to play. That and to just to enjoy it, make sure we compete all day. I think it's shaping up to be a great game. Wynnum Manly are a similar team to us and have good strike through the middle but also on the edges. Their left hand edge is their stronger side but you also have Shaylee Bent on the right side. They have very handy backrowers and centres.

Wynnum Manly Seagulls coach Ron Troutman: It's been a really good week for us. There's been a lot of fun and plenty of excitement around. The girls are jumping out of their skin to get amongst it. To start the week, we wanted to enjoy the fact we made the grand final and celebrate being good enough to get there. Now it's making sure we're ready. It's about our controllables and making sure we're turning up for each other. I expect a very powerful forward pack again from the Burleigh Bears. They certainly warrant a lot of respect there and they have a very smart halfback in Zahara too so we have to make sure we keep everything in control when we can. My message will be to get out there, enjoy it and make sure we're doing what we do well and not worry about what's coming at us. We control what we do first and deal with what the opposition are doing second. It's about being as clean as we can and putting our best foot forward.
