Murphy confident historic halves pairing can steer derby victory

Karyn Murphy has given her full vote of confidence to the youngest halves pairing in NRLW history as the Titans prepare to face the Broncos at The Gabba on Thursday night.

Confirming an ankle injury to Taliah Fuimaono has ruled the Jillaroos star out of the M1 derby, the news opens the door formally to former Australian Schoolgirl Sienna Lofipo after her 13 minute debut cameo as the replacement 18th player, partnering Chantay Kiria-Ratu in the halves in what will be their second game together after a strong start in tandem.

Already having steered Queensland to victory in the Under 19 interstate clash earlier this month, the pair of 18-year-old's next task will be to command the Coast to securing their second win of the season, but standing in their way of the talented teens will be the competition's most experienced playmaker and Broncos captain Ali Brigginshaw.

"It's exciting to see both Chantay and Sienna playing together again," Murphy said.

"We saw them paired in the Under 19 State of Origin clash only a couple of weeks ago so they've already got a good combination.

"Sienna already got a taste of it on the weekend which was good for her so I'm really looking forward to those two playing together."

Only having a five-day turnaround into their second game of the year, their season opening victory against the Cowboys has helped prepare for another big Queensland derby - one that is expecting to have a lot of motivation given the rivalry.

"There is a small buzz around the group and in Round 1, we knew we had to come away with a win there and we did that, but there's definitely a lot of improvement in us and we know that, so we'll keep working hard and look for an improved performance again.

"There's also definitely plenty of feeling from both sides to get the win. We've got some ex-Broncos players and they have some girls as well who previously played here at the Titans.

"Definitely there'll be that feeling there and Round 2 will be a good one."

'It's going to be a different experience': Murphy

The third instalment of the NRLW local derby will also be a history-making affair with it the first women's match to be played at The Gabba - a factor that Murphy has spoken to her group about at Titans training this week given the difference in the field to a typical rugby league venue.

"We have spoken about that and there being a different feeling on that oval where the grandstands are and how close you'd usually feel," she said.

"Unfortunately, we can't have a training session there or captain's run or anything like that to get a good feel for it, but it'll be the same for both sides.

"Speaking to players who have experienced playing on grounds like that as well, it's just not only the kickers but in general, everyone out there getting used to what it will be like, so it'll be interesting to see how they go."

Kick-off is at 5.40pm, live on 9Gem, 9Now, Fox League and Kayo Sports.
