As Brian Kelly booms in this pre-season’s battle of the centres, he’s been quick to realise there is a jokester in his new premiership-winning mentor.
Entering his sixth season with the Titans, the 27-year-old knows there’s plenty of contest for a starting spot in his maiden pre-season under Des Hasler.
But even with no position promised, Kelly’s humour has only been able to thrive in the ‘refreshing’ direction the five-time grand finalist is taking his new club, stating the veteran coach has the perfect mix of stern tactics and a good laugh.
“He’s got a bit of a joke in him, but he’s also got that serious stern side… it’s what we need,” he said.
Recently extending his time on the Gold Coast until the end of 2026, BK is another long-standing player relishing in what his new coach has to offer.
Even after what was arguably a career-best season for the Northern Rivers junior, he feels he is constantly improving with the more time he spends under the 458-game coach.
Especially having to add a new string to his bow alongside the rest of his backline teammates – tasked in learning to play on both sides of the field.
“All the backs are learning both sides and there’s plenty of competition there… it brings out the best in everyone,” Kelly said.
“I feel I’m getting better and learning every day.
“Dessie’s been telling me what I need to work on…my main ones are fitness and defence.”
But what has pleased the Titans’ resident comedian the most is Hasler’s ability to drop the guard and crack a joke on occasion, which has been a key to his invaluable mentorship with the playing group.
“I love it. He knows the right words and at right timing and he knows how to put players on the right path,” Kelly said.
“We all give a bit of cheek, but when it gets to the nitty gritty… it makes each other better.”
