'There's always competition': Harrison not taking No. 7 guarantee lightly after strong debut

Zane Harrison isn't prepared to take his coach's backing for granted as he begins life as a NRL halfback.

Earning high praise from Josh Hannay after a strong debut against a star-studded Roosters line-up, the Titans mentor has declared Gold Coast's No. 7 jersey is the 20-year-old's for the foreseeable future as he finds his feet in one of the toughest positions in the game.

But the schoolboy prodigy wants to ensure his selection is not just based on the guarantee he's been given, eager to reward the faith shown with good performances week-to-week in the coveted playmaking position.

"I think [Josh] timed it perfectly. He's backed me from the start and let me continue to learn my craft in Q Cup and that's what I've been doing this year," Harrison said.

"To finally get an opportunity, I'm really thankful for Josh to back me.

"I'm still thinking there's competition [for the No. 7 jersey among the squad].

"There's always competition, so I have to do everything I can to retain that jersey and keep my spot in the team.

"I'll still be putting my best foot forward and trying to string some good games together to put me in good stead."

Describing his maiden appearance as a 'surreal' start to his career up against the likes of James Tedesco and Daly Cherry-Evans, Harrison's next assignment is against the Knights at a sold out Suncorp Stadium for Magic Round - another big occasion he's excited to relish.

"To be able to play at Magic Round is super special and obviously growing up watching a round like that, you always want to be a part of it," he said.

"I can't wait to play at Suncorp against the Knights."

The Queensland and National Schoolboy champion hasn't forgotten his roots either, despite now being immersed in the bright lights of the NRL.

The former Palm Beach Currumbin alum spent time at the Kinetic Titans Schools League grand finals on Monday in Nerang, cheering on his old team in an epic grudge match against Keebra Park - a clash he's been part of many times.

"There's plenty of good memories. We had a bit of success [against Keebra] back in my schooling days," Harrison said.

"I love coming down to watch, especially when PBC are playing and I love seeing all my old coaches and the kids coming through.

"It's good to watch."
