Rookie Aquis Titans halfback Kane Elgey has been chosen in the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII after just 16 games in the NRL.

Daniel Mortimer, whose form was outstanding in the second half of 2015, has earned a spot on the bench.

"I guess I wasn't expecting to make the team after only 16 NRL games but I'm very honoured to be selected," Elgey said.

"It's a great opportunity to play alongside some of the players selected who have had a lot of NRL experience. It will definitely improve my confidence to train with and learn from players like Adam Reynolds.

"No way could I have thought 12 months ago that I would finish this season like this. It's beyond my expectations."

James Roberts was almost a certain selection but was unavailable after doctors deemed he needed to rest a back injury that troubled him for the last few weeks of the season while Ryan James was also unavailable because of an ongoing shoulder problem.

Elgey has been chosen as starting five-eighth in the game, with Rabbitohs’ half Adam Reynolds on the other side of the ruck.

The team includes some of the game’s most exciting young players in Jack Wighton, Alex Johnston, Dane Gagai, Jake Trbojevic, Tyrone Roberts and Elgey.

The Ivan Cleary-coached side will play PNG in Port Moresby on Saturday September 26.
