The Titans, in partnership with the NRL, have helped 38 young students realise their dream of graduating from high school and moving on to higher education or employment in 2020.
The NRL’s School to Work program was launched in July 2017, when the Titans became the 11th NRL club to join the program.
Since that time, over 130 students have engaged in the program from 16 schools across the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region.
The Titans High Performance Centre hosted a graduation ceremony, where Executive Chairman Dennis Watt and Titans players Ash Taylor, Tyrone Roberts, Tyrone Peachey, Leilani Latu and Treymain Spry presented students with certificates after a very successful year.
Students spend two or three years in the program, receiving one-on-one support and encouragement to achieve their QCE/HSC, as well as guidance in exploring and pursuing their career aspirations.
School to Work Project Officer Mel Lightburn has a deep passion for her work and enjoys the opportunity to help change lives for the better.
“For me, it’s more than my job to support and mentor these students, it’s a privilege,” Lightburn said.
“To be in a position where they entrust me with their aspirations and to be able to empower them to pursue their dreams and take hold of those opportunities and make something of it – it’s the best job in the world.”
Students may have finished their high school studies, but Lightburn continues the relationship as they move into full-time work or study.
“Most of the students are heading off to university next year to study a Bachelor of Business and Commerce, Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science, Bachelor of Wildlife Science, Bachelor of Business.
“Others are heading off to the defence force, while a couple of students are pursuing apprenticeships in carpentry and plumbing.”
