Titans fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of a vintage season from Ash Taylor in 2020, with team leader Kevin Proctor admitting he had never seen the Gold Coast halfback looking fitter than he does under new coach Justin Holbrook.

So much of a hoped-for Titans revival in 2020 rests on the shoulder of Taylor who, despite a tough year last season as he dealt with personal issues, has hit the ground running with his effort and execution leading into the new year.

More than one observer at Titans training has acknowledged that Taylor looks back to his best, with his application and enthusiasm back to the levels that had him touted as one of the NRL’s top halfback not so long ago.

While Proctor advised a cautious approach, given there is a huge gulf between performing at training and transferring that form into results in the furnace of the NRL premiership season, the veteran acknowledged that the signs from Taylor were promising for the year ahead.

“He has come back in a really good mindset,” Proctor said of the halfback. “He has put his head down and bum up and training really hard.

Lifting the tempo

“This is as fit as I have seen him. He is really enjoying his footy at the moment as well.

“Hopefully he keeps that up and takes that into the season.”
