By the numbers: Nothing stops Titans excelling in pre-season

The Gold Coast Titans' pre-season is officially over!

Tackling COVID, wild weather and floods, nothing could stop the playing group from 'training the house down' in preparation for the year ahead.

After missing out on the second week of the playoffs by the minuscule of margins, the blue and gold army have used last year's finals heartbreak as motivation to grow from last year's exit, exciting Titans high performance manager Klint Hoare.

"The Titans players have been lifting, shifting and moving weights in the new facility set up, whilst achieved some big numbers on the field within their speed, conditioning, and football skill-based training," Hoare said.

"There were some incredible feats reached in the summer months as the squad prepared to get back into the swing of things - as seen in the pre-season summary shared recently - with some Gold Coast players smashing their personal best records in the gym and on the field.

"The 1.2 kilometre shuttle run is a test conducted to provide the strength and conditioning coach with an insight into the aerobic capacity of our athletes. Achieving optimal aerobic capacity results allows players to complete in games with reduced fatigue," Hoare said.

"The best on ground was Beau Fermor with a time of four minutes and 30 seconds, a new club record; whilst Tanah Boyd clocked an impressive four minutes and 34 seconds and half Toby Sexton recorded four minutes and 38 seconds.

"This sits these three players within an elite NRL status.

"Speed-wise, the squad collectively have all increased their sprint mechanics, meaning they can move across the ground with efficiency.

"In 2022, the fastest recorded players over the summer months was Alofi Khan-Periera at 36 kilometres per hour, Beau Fermor and Jojo Fifita at 35.5 kilometres per hour, whilst both Jayden Campbell and Phil Sami have been clocked at 35.2 kilometres per hour.

"With reference to acceleration and the ability to beat a man within the first few steps, look no further than Esan Marsters who tops the list.

"Outside backs Corey Thompson and Jojo Fifita and new five-eighth AJ Brimson - all within the first 10 metres - can cover the ground in less than 1.62 seconds or 6.17 metres per second.

"When it comes to absolute strength or the strongest amongst the players in the gym, 2019 Paul Broughton medallist Moeaki Fotuaika - with a 110 kilogram body mass - sits at the top of the list and able to squat equivalent to two times his body weight at 220 kilograms.

"David Fifita excels at the bench pull with 150 kilograms and Greg Marzhew performs a 190 kilogram bench press.

"Greg also holds the tag of being the absolute strongest at the club with a deadlift recording of 270 kilograms.

"Finally, when it comes to relative force - a measurement of the players ability to express the strength qualities being gained within the gym - Sam McIntyre, Jaimin Jolliffe and Tanah Boyd, alongside Dave Fifita and Pat Herbert round out the top five in the club."

The squad will enjoy a much-deserve weekend off before hitting the training paddock on Monday to prepare for Round 1, up against the Parramatta Eels on Sunday week.
