Titans utility confident of beating anyone with 80-minute performance

It's no secret the biggest focus for the Gold Coast this week has been starting well.

Conceding 20-point first half leads in the past fortnight against Parramatta and Manly respectively, should the Titans be able to get going from the opening whistle, the winning performances should come off the back of that according to utility Will Smith.

"It's been happening for a while now and we obviously know we have to start games stronger. We know we've performed in the back end of games and can comeback against anyone," Smith said.

"If we start well, I'm sure we can blow teams off the park if we can put it all together for 80 minutes."

With the first half completion and possession rates being the club's Achilles heel in the last two contests, the 81-game handy No. 14 is hoping this weekend they can build some pressure on the Cowboys' try line and force points through patience.

"I think we're a bit frantic once we get the ball and we're not spending a lot of time on their line trying to build some pressure," Smith said.

"If we can hold the ball a lot longer and build some pressure in their half, that would go a long way."

Sitting with two wins and four losses in the opening six weeks, Smith knows this weekend's Queensland derby clash in Townsville is an important game to scalp the two points to keep in touch with the top teams.

"No matter who you play against in the NRL, every game is going be hard and it depends on how hard you want to make it for yourself as well," Smith said.

"If we start strong in the first half, then we can finish finish well.

"It's still early season but we definitely can't get to the end of the year and start saying to ourselves... 'oh, we should have won that game and we wish we would have won this game'.

"We need to start to turn those close ones into wins."

The 29-year-old is also happy with his role at his new club, filling any position coach Justin Holbrook needs him to play, getting through at least 30 minutes each game as a live-wire 'super sub' to provide plenty of spark in attack.

"My role is whatever the coach asks me to do," Smith said.

"I just get on there and play some footy... that's it."
