Spine shootout: Plenty to play for in final two rounds

There's plenty to play for in the final two weeks... especially for the Gold Coast Titans spine.

As well as being determined to avoid finishing on the bottom of the NRL ladder, the next fortnight against the Knights (at Cbus) and Warriors (in New Zealand) is a great opportunity for everyone in the squad to put their best foot forward, especially those in key positions.

With new recruits Kieran Foran and Sam Verrills joining the raft of current playmakers, Justin Holbrook will have so much talent at his fingertips for the new year ahead.

But for for AJ Brimson - who has had the versatility to play at both fullback and five-eighth this season - his main focus isn't joining the debate of where he'll play next year but rather finishing the year with two wins, allowing the rest to take care of itself.

"We'll just try and get some wins. That's my main focus really," Brimson said.

"Individually, I'll just play as best as I can and that's next year, so I'd like to worry about this year and we'll try and finish off with a couple of wins."

Titans strike back

Knowing this season hasn't been the most ideal swapping between the two positions, it's something the 23-year-old has been happy to do given the two injuries to Jayden Campbell that sidelined the live-wire for almost half the season.

"It's not perfect... you probably want to be in the one position, but at the end of the day, injuries happen. JC got injured and then we weren't winning games, so we had to try something else and put me back there. He then came back and then got injured again, but now he's back there, so you can't really control that," Brimson said.

"I do enjoy playing both positions and sometimes I look forward to each position differently for different reasons, but for next year, hopefully I'll be able to lock down one position."

As for what that is, it's something the Prince of Palmy wants to leave for his coach to determine.

"I'm not too sure... you'll have to ask Justin that one," Brimson said.

"But I'm not sure to be honest [what my best position is].

"I've felt like as a team, we've struggled this year, but I haven't hated my time at six.

"I've heard a few people think my best position probably is at fullback, so that's just a headache for Justin, because JC is a good player as well.

"It's just about where we will fit, so we'll leave that up to him and I'll just keep trying to rip in."

With the No. 6 on his back for the time being, Brimson is excited to take the field at Cbus Super Stadium for the final home clash of 2022, and hopes to bring some joy to the Legion to say thanks for their support in what has been otherwise a tough season for the Titans.

"It's been a disappointing year, but even last time we were here after we beat Manly, the crowd was awesome and we are appreciative because we know it's been a tough year but they always turn out," Brimson said.

"We're stoked to be back at home this week and we'll make sure we put on a good performance for our home crowd and fans.

"We don't get to play here for our last round of the year, so this is like a send off for the year for our home fans.

"It's been a disappointing season, but I know a good win will definitely help out a little bit."
