Set of six: Trial 1 v Broncos

The first outing for the Titans has sparked plenty of discussion and debate heading into the club's major trial against the Dolphins next weekend at Kayo Stadium.

Whilst it may have been a slow start against the Broncos at Sunshine Coast Stadium, once the Gold Coast juggernaut got going, it was hard to stop as they powered home with 18 unanswered points to finish the game locked up 24-24 at the final whistle.

There were a number of admirable performances in the first hit-out of 2023, giving coach Justin Holbrook plenty to think about with just under three weeks until the season proper kicks off against the Tigers in Sydney.

Here are the six biggest talking points from Trial 1 between the Titans and Broncos:

1. Boyd has ice in his veins... again

The Titans' resident clutch man was at it once again... with all the pressure on the young half to draw level with the M1 rivals, the playmaker slotted a tough conversion from the sideline to lock up the game with five minutes to play.

With the 'c' next to his name for the clash, the 22-year-old rose to the occasion much like he did in last season's finale when he kicked the winning field-goal in extra-time - the moment no doubt impressing coach Holbrook and all but locking him to partner Kieran Foran in the halves for next Sunday, and for Round 1 against the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval.

2. Jolliffe shows his starting jersey intent

Jaimin Jolliffe has made a real statement to Justin Holbrook that he wants to start come Round 1 of the season proper against the Tigers. The 26-year-old finished the game with an incredible 213 running metres over 17 runs in his first outing of 2023 in two separate stints that gave the entire forward pack plenty of inspiration.

The 60-gamer started on four occasions in his 19 appearances last season with the prop forward hoping to add more No. 8 jerseys to this year's collection with more performances like what he put on show on Sunday night.

3. Stimson shines in first stint

Gold Coast new recruit Joe Stimson showed he belongs in Titans colours with a strong opening stanza in his first outing since moving up from the Bulldogs. The 27-year-old forward played a perfect complimentary role with Jolliffe in his opening stint, before getting through a few extra minutes in the second half to finish the night making 93 running metres - 35 of those being post-contact.

Playing a majority of his career in the second row, the move to the middle proved to be a masterstroke for the workhorse, who also made 19 tackles while on-field.

4. NRL, meet Keano Kini

Fans may have waited until around the 45th minute for the whizkid to be unleashed, but it didn't take long for the Australian Schoolboy to make an impact. With his fast footwork and deceptive running game, the 18-year-old live-wire set Sunshine Coast Stadium alight in his first NRL trial appearance.

Starting his long-term Titans deal on the development roster in 2023, Kini finished the night with a line-break, two tackle breaks and 151 running metres to his name in only just under a half of football. It was an incredible introduction to first grade rugby league with the Palm Beach Currumbin star putting his case forward to be included once again in next weekend's final trial against the Dolphins.

5. Fifita solid in different role

David Fifita may not appear on the highlights reel running over countless defenders to score a try, but his efforts against the Broncos should be recognised - getting the job done as a solid right edge forward against his former club.

Featuring for around 60 minutes of the game, the barnstormer finished his stint with 121 running metres, as well as a line-break and two offloads; but it was his defensive numbers that should be truly highlighted.

An element of his game he's worked hardest on over the summer months, the 22-year-old made 22 tackles at an incredible 96 percent efficiency - drawing level with edge partner Klese Haas who was just as efficient with his 26 tackles.

6. Titans' future is very bright

The minor trial allows the club to showcase some of the Coast's bright stars coming through the grades, and the players who got their chance to pull on a Titans jersey truly showed the rugby league nursery that is being built at Parkwood.

Tino 2.0 - a.k.a the skipper's younger brother Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui was one of the top performers when he got his opportunity, making 101 running metres and 24 tackles.

Tom Weaver showed his playmaking prowess in the second half, with instinctive vision to setup a try and involve himself in a number of other scoring plays when he entered the contest in the second stanza.

Future Titans graduates Josiah Pahulu and Ryan Foran took their opportunities when given the chance to - especially 'mini Moe' Pahulu, who helped turn over possession towards the Titans with a trick play that will be replayed over and over.

Fantastic footwork by Josiah Pahulu to steal possession

Vaka Sikahele also shone after waiting a number of seasons to get his crack, coming up with a classic dummy-half try and delivering slick service out of nine in his stint, which also involved 50 running metres and 18 tackles.
