Campbell charging into Magic Round excited by new dynamic duo

Jayden Campbell is hoping the Titans' halves switch will help him conjure up his magical best against the Knights as he dons the heritage Chargers jersey his father helped make famous almost three decades ago.

Schoolboy prodigy Zane Harrison is set to back up last week’s impressive NRL debut performance with another No. 7 feature together with Campbell - his move to five-eighth set to carve out further free-flowing opportunities on Sunday.

Happy with the change in roles, he credited the 20-year-old halfback's ability to find his voice and simplify play from the back line.

"He’s (Zane) pretty quiet around the group, but when he’s on the field and when we’re actually playing, he’s a great communicator and he synthesises what we have to do really well," Campbell said.

'It's a proud moment for myself and the whole team': Campbell

"I’ve actually been really taken aback and impressed by how he communicates and how easy he makes it for not just myself but for everyone.

"I'm really happy he’s out on the field with me."

Proud to pull on the Titans’ iconic retro kit which pays homage to the Gold Coast's iconic franchise, the son of a gun follows in the footsteps of Preston who made his NRL debut and repped the Chargers jersey in 1998.

"Getting to represent the history of the Gold Coast rugby league … it’s a proud moment not just for myself but for the team," Campbell said.

"He (Campbell’s father) was excited that we come out with them as our heritage jersey, so it’ll be pretty cool for him to see it this weekend.

"Being able to wear that jersey this weekend is really cool."

Friendly fire broils as Campbell anticipates a fierce contest against a confident Knights side named by his former coach Justin Holbrook, who gave him his NRL debut in 2021.

"It’s always good to see a former coach get another chance in the NRL," he said.

"They’re going really well at the moment too, so it’ll be exciting to come up against them this weekend."
