“It was really hard for me because I’d signed a contract and I think I’m a pretty honourable person and to go back on what I’d already signed was massive for me, I didn’t make the decision lightly,” he said.

“It was just one of those things that I knew in the back of my mind and my heart was the right thing to do.

“I don’t think we would have lasted two years over there.”

From interviews done previously, Coach Garth Brennan has indicated that Ryan James and Kevin Proctor are likely starters in the second row position but Matthews is putting his best foot forward every session in search for a spot in the 17.

“Kevvie (Protor) is injured (at the moment) but I’ve been filling in in the back row and if I can get a crack anywhere in the team I’ll be happy,” he said.

“Definitely there’s motivation there, obviously I’m getting towards the end of my career now.

“I haven’t got too many years left, so I’m trying to make the most of whatever I’ve got left.”
