Moeaki Fotuaika relishing new role as mentor for young Titans forwards

Despite being just 24 years old himself, Moeaki Fotuaika has established himself as a senior member of the Titans forward pack and a mentor to the young crop of players coming through.

Debuting at 18 years of age, Fotuaika has quickly amassed 126 appearances for the Gold Coast and a wealth of experience including representative honours for Queensland and Tonga.

With a strong contingent of players now graduating through the Titans development pathways, the Tongan representative has revealed he relishes his new role as a mentor for the younger players and understands his responsibility to instill the correct attitude.

"For us, it's about what we do during the week, our training, the meetings with positions, it's about teaching the younger boys, especially in training," he said.

"You're giving them little tips and preparing well, which will hopefully help them make the right choices on the field."

Speaking about the Titans' golden point loss to Canberra on the weekend, Moeaki admitted that while he was disappointed with the result, his team's performance was a step in the right direction.

"It's hard when you're losing and things are not going your way... but I know it's going to turn for us, we've got the team and it showed on the weekend," he said.

"We didn't have much ball but you know, you look at the score and how much ball Canberra had, they should have smashed us.

"We've got the attack and the defence, it's just putting it together for a full 80-minute performance."

After an impressive defensive display in the Nation's capital, the two-time Paul Broughton Medalist is confident things are heading in the right direction this season for the young Gold Coast side.

"Every week we’ve just been getting better and slowly improving, it just doesn’t show on the scoreboard," he said.

"But as a forward pack, I feel like we’re getting better and as a team it’s just been slowly building and we showed that on the weekend."

Fotuaika will line up for the Titans this Saturday night against the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Cbus Super Stadium.
